Brochure design tips

Brochure design tips are generally learned the hard way for the novice designer. Stupid mistakes can be expensive mistakes for you and for your customer. The result is wasted paper, bruised egos and lost business. If you learn anything from my brochure design tips page, the best advice I have to offer is to be creative and challenge the orthodoxy that results in a brochure design that looks like all the rest.

Consider who is your audience and spend time finding out what they consider important and what determines their decision to buy.

Some questions to ask yourself:

  • What can you offer that your competition does not?
  • Saying that “We’re the Best” is cliche. You need to prove it with examples, testimonials, etc.
  • What are the determining factors that customers look for that will close the deal? e.g. Is it solely based on price, service or support?
  • If they have had a negative experience with a similar company as yours, what made them start shopping around?
  • Each customer is different with their own prerequistes. Find out what they are and then address them as a personal approach to your marketing effort.

Look at your competition and learn from their mistakes and their lack of creativity. DON’T copy what they are doing! Like a dog chasing its own tail, businesses are constantly emulating each other. The company that breaks the mold and challenges the norm will benefit.

Consider these facts:

  • Competitors are obsessed with each other’s advertising strategy while neglecting what should be the focus of their own campaign: their addressing their customers’ needs.
  • By emulating another company’s ad campaign, you are reinforcing their advertisting efforts and not your own.

Advertise when business is good. Don’t wait when you need business to get the word out. Prepare yourself for the lean days by advertising in a consistent fashion even been times are good.
